On 1st February, Bruno Le Maire, the French Minister for the Economy, Finance and Industrial and Digital Sovereignty, announced that 10,000 official checks would be carried out on food products to validate French origin. To date, more than 2,000 official checks have been carried out by the DGCCRF, with several hundred anomalies detected.

Food fraud : replacing saffron with gardenia extract

At the beginning of April 2022, the Spanish Guardia Civil arrested 11 people and incriminated 3 companies for “crimes against Public Health (Agri-Food Fraud), Fraud, Against the Market and Consumers and membership of a Criminal Group” after uncovering a major saffron fraud scheme in which gardenia was passed off as saffron.

Authenticity of herbs & spices: Results of an EU wide coordinated control plan
