Dairy products
Integrity issues
There are four main types of dairy product integrity issues:
- Addition of undeclared ingredients (Water, lactoserum, Nitrogen enhancers, fat, sugars, preservatives, etc.)
- Mislabelling of animal species producing the milk
- Mislabelling of geographical origin
- Mislabelling of applied processing (e.g. heat treatment, freezing, ripening, etc.)
In formulated dairy products, the integrity risk is extended to the non-dairy ingredients (e.g.: aromas, fruit preparations): see relevant offers
Potential threat to public health
The addition of Melamine (Nitrogen enhancer) in milk powders resulted in 50000 hospitalisations and 6 confirmed deaths in China back in 2008, resulting in one of the largest food fraud scandal. In response to this scandal, a tolerable daily intake (TDI) of 0.2 mg/kg body weight was established by EFSA according to that established by the World Health Organization.
But who knows which adulterant will come next?
Foreign milk species or protein sources are also creating a risk of allergy.
To preserve Dairy product reputation and consumer health, monitor their integrity through analytical testing
